There are a variety of factors that can cause your gutters to loosen. It largely has to do with the weight of debris accumulating as well as the effects of water and possibly snow and ice. When your gutters become clogged, the water cannot properly drain, adding to the weight and causing it to either stagnate or find another way out (which can cause leaks in your home). Water, on the other hand, is quite heavy and will drag your gutters away from their anchoring. If you use gutter spikes instead of gutter hangers, the holes will eventually wear out, and the entire system will fall apart. What are the signs your gutters are coming loose? What can you do about them? 

Dripping Water From Behind Your Gutters

It’s a good clue that something isn’t operating properly if you see water forming on the bottom of your gutters. This indicates that water is leaking from someplace, most likely from clogged gutters. When the gutter gets clogged, the gutter itself and your fascia board will have leaks between them. Water dripping from the gutter, water pouring down the wall or even water coming over the front lip of the gutter will all be visible. The quickest fix for this issue is to have them cleaned out and inspected because there are some forms of blockages in gutters that are difficult to remove through conventional means, like the decayed black goopy sludge that tends to stick to the insides of downspouts and gutters.

Sagging Gutters and Visibly Loose

The most obvious sign that your gutters are loose is if you can see them sagging even from afar. Gutters are designed to run in a straight line, and if they appear to be bowing down or sagging in any way, they should be re-secured and reinforced with new hardware. Another way to confirm that your gutter is getting loose is to find a gap between the gutter and the wall. If there is a visible gap between them, it’s probably best to call for your gutter installation and repair team.

Deteriorating Gutter Spikes

Gutter spikes are also known as gutter nails or gutter screws, but they all serve the same purpose. It is a large nail that passes through the gutter and secures the fascia board to the rafters. The advantage of unfastened gutter spikes is that they are visible from the ground. It’s typically as simple as hammering (or screwing) them back into place to fix them. But keep in mind, if you repeatedly pound them back into the same hole, the hole itself will eventually wear out and no longer give any grip because you’re physically beating them down. Keep an eye out for any rusted hardware as well. The gutter spikes are rusting if you observe a brown line emerging from where they are, and these rusted spikes can break at any time, which can be frustrating and risky if they break during the middle of a storm.
