7 Siding Terms Every Homeowner Must Know

When buying siding for your home, there may be terms that you may not know. Instead of letting the professionals handle everything with your siding, it’s good to know at least some of the terminology.

1. Backerboard

This is a material installed on the face or the side of your home. Contractors apply this between the studs and the siding so it can provide an even surface for your vinyl siding.

2. Drip Cap/Head flashing

This is an accessory that is installed with vertical siding. This ensures that water drips away from the panels of your home and does not infiltrate them.

3. Fascia

The fascia is a board that is attached to the ends of your rafters. This is placed between the roofing material and the soffit overhang. Its primary purpose is to make sure that your gutters stay in place. It also helps prevent water damage by making sure that water doesn’t submerge your roof deck.

4. Flashing

Siding requires flashing. This is a thin material placed behind J-channels, corner posts and windows among other places. Its purpose is to keep draining water from penetrating into your system.

5. Sealant

This is a material made of a variety of compounds. It’s used to fill or seal joints in wood, metal, masonry, vinyl and other materials. Sealants can also be seen in other parts of your home besides the siding.

6. Soffit

This is the part where the exterior walls meet the roofline of your home. These are usually vented to allow air to come in and out. This works together with your fascia to prevent water from entering your home’s structure.

7. Underlayment

It is a material placed under siding panels. This helps make sure that water does not penetrate through the faces of your home. An underlayment can also be seen on your roof under the shingles.

To learn more about the parts of your siding, don’t hesitate to ask your siding contractor. They will also give you advice on the best siding materials to choose from as well as ones that will fit perfectly in your budget.
