3 Soffit Problems You Should Know

One of the most overlooked home components is the soffit, which covers the underside of the gap created by your roofing system and exterior wall. You’ll want to make sure your soffits are in good shape, and this means watching out for possible issues.

  1. Moisture Damage
The location of the soffits make them a primary target for moisture damage. When the soffits are exposed to excess moisture due to clogged gutters or damaged flashing, they will develop mold and rot, which can weaken the structure of the roofing system when overlooked. To prevent moisture damage in your soffits, keep your gutters clean, and make sure your roof flashing remains intact.
  1. Dry Rot
This problem may develop due to airborne spores coming into contact with a damp soffit. When these spores germinate and sprout, they’ll spread across the soffit and compromise its structural integrity. You’ll know this because pieces may fall out of the component when you tap it with a screwdriver. When this is already the case, you might need a prompt soffit replacement.
  1. Pest Intrusion
When the soffit has large gaps and is not properly installed, birds, bugs and small animals may use it as an access point to your roof and home. This can lead to a deteriorating roof structure, droppings in the attic and an increased risk to disease. That’s why it always pays to work with someone reliable and professional for your soffit installation.

What a Damage-Free Soffit Can Do For You

Soffits can give your home a clean and finished appearance by covering the rafters at the underside of your roof. At the same time, they can prevent excess moisture and wind-driven rain from entering your attic space. Some types of soffits can even improve ventilation, heading off heat and moisture in the attic, and helping prolong the life of your roof.
